You’ve met someone online. They’re charming, attractive, and seem to check all the right boxes. But something feels off—too perfect, maybe too distant. If you’re dating someone from Russia, Ukraine, or Romania online and haven’t met them in person, there’s a growing chance… you might be dating a ghost.
Not the supernatural kind—but a person who doesn’t exist at all.
The Rise of Fabricated Identities in Online Dating
Romance fraud is not new, but scammers have become smarter and harder to spot. Many now create completely fake identities using stolen photos, fake job titles, and detailed backstories. Expert private investigators from Russia PI explain this kind of fraud is especially common in high-risk regions like Russia, Ukraine, and Romania, where organized crime groups operate large-scale romance scams.
These aren’t one-off lies. Scammers often invest weeks or even months grooming their targets and there is specific evidence that supports the vast dimensions of the issue. A joint international operation by Europol, Eurojust, and partners from 61 countries’ authorities arrested approximately 3,950 suspects and seized $257 million USD in illegal assets from various online scam operations, including romance scams.
Common Lies Scammers Tell
Romance scammers operating out of Russia, Ukraine, and surrounding regions often paint a picture of success and beauty to win over their victims. Many pose as highly educated and accomplished women—doctors, scientists, business owners, or even diplomats—who are temporarily facing a difficult situation. They may claim to be affected by the war, caring for a sick parent, or dealing with bureaucratic obstacles that prevent them from traveling. These scammers frequently use photos and videos of real webcam models, or directly hire webcam models to be the face of the scam, and reinforce the illusion. This leads victims to believe they’re in a relationship with a powerful, intelligent, and stunning woman.
The storyline often includes a small request for help—covering visa fees, medical expenses, or blocked bank accounts—which quickly snowballs into larger financial demands. Their stories are designed to justify avoiding video calls, postponing visits, and keeping the victim emotionally and financially invested for as long as possible.
Signs You May Be Dating a Ghost
Here are the top red flags to watch for:
- Romance scammers avoid meeting in person after months of chatting
- They have an impressive job but vague details or no proof
- Their social media looks too perfect—or doesn’t exist at all
- They ask for money, crypto, or bank transfers
- Their photos appear in reverse image search tools
Scammers can be very convincing. Some even use AI-generated images or fake voice calls to appear real. But one thing remains true: if they don’t hold up under investigation, they’re likely not real.
